Examination and treatment of lower limb varicose veins

Varicose vein treatment is preceded by examining how low limb veins function. It is necessary to obtain basic information on the vein passability. The Doppler system applied in the clinic is based on state-of-the art technology. It is a non-invasive (bloodless) method. Digital photopletysmography allows examination results to be processed using a computer. The objective of the examination is to establish the quality of the muscle vein pump, which under normal circumstances returns blood to the lungs and heart. The examination is not only important for a decision on whether varicose veins can be removed surgically or using a non-surgical method (sclerotherapy using different medicines) but also for assessment of vein blood circulation in pregnant women and other patients showing greater stress on lower limb veins (sportsmen). Using appropriate bandages (elastic bandages, elastic stockings) can prevent the development of deep vein inflammations and subsequent very dangerous complications.

Method of removing varicose veins

Varicose veins are removed using injections with a special liquid applied directly into the vein. The sclerosant concentration depends on the vein lumen, i.e. a concentration of 0.5% is injected into „microvarices“. The bigger the lumen, the bigger the solution concentration - 1%, 2% up to 3%. The injected sclerosant causes a controlled inflammatory response in the treated section and eliminates the varicose vein. The whole treatment is nearly painless, generally only the incision is felt. In rare cases, mostly in microvarices, the solution also gets into the vein environment, which is felt as minor tingling. Immediately after the injection, an elastic bandage is put on the lower limb and elastic compression must be used for three weeks in total (24 hours a day during the first week and in the next 2 weeks the compression is worn only during the day), i.e. until the first check-up.
